Nitrate dopes are more flammable than butyrate dopes but they do “stick” far better than butyrate dopes, in fact most cellulose based cements are nitrate based. The normal practice is to start with nitrate and then switch to butyrate for build up coats and colour.
We also still keep the famous British “Red” dope which has red oxide added to it to stop any fungal problems, red dope is still the norm for use with Irish linen and cotton fabrics.
